Lesson 11 - The Internet

  • What is the internet?
    • The internet is the world's largest WAN made up millions of smaller networks. more than 2 billion people regularly use the internet as of December 2011. The Internet is rooted in the early 1960s in a project run by ARPA,the agency that would later make ARPANET, the first WAN. when ARPA's mission became focused on national security, their name changed to DARPA, the name would go back in forth for  the next few years, today it is DARPA.
  • What is a protocol?
    • Protocols are the rules for how computers should communicate inside a network. Protocols control or enable the connection, communication, and transfer of data through a network. the first network protocol was created and used for ARPANET in 1969. in 1980's new networks started to crop up, some of these gave network access to personal computers. in 1983 a new set of protocols was made called TCP/IP, it became the standard that almost all networks use to exchange data.
  • What is DNS?
    • Known as the Domain Name Service, it looks up a host name and returns an IP address, or vice versa. if we didn't have DNS then there would be no internet communication. Each part of the internet has DNS servers, and each computer is interned, configured to query a certain type or specific DNS server. Home or personal computers are configured to query their ISP's name server or a free DNS name server.
  • Explain what an ISP is and what it does?
    • Data from the internet ends up traveling through ISPs. ISPs usually connect through Routers that connect networks on the internet.Data Travels from router to router till it reaches its destination. Trace route is a utility you use to show how data is routed through the world wide web.
  • What is a PING and Firewall?
    • Ping Utilities send test packets over the internet and then determines whether the machine they are sent to receives them or not. Pinging a computer can tell whether your connection to that machine is working.A Firewall is a software (or hardware) based program that protects you from internet threats. some schools and businesses even customize their firewalls with certain protocols so they can determine what is allowed on their network.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

  • Read "Connecting to the Internet" (Blog Post - summarize 3 main sections in 3 separate paragraphs)
    • The Internet is a large WAN made up of many smaller networks. many networks connecting to each other to create the internet. the smallest networks are the ones in peoples homes, these networks are then connected a larger network run by their internet services provider (ISP). the internet is just a conglomeration of connections, backbones and routers handle data at the highest levels.

    • a Internet Service provider helps individuals and companies connect to the internet. signing up to an ISP will give you an email address, storage, and sometimes web hosting. today DSLs and cable internet are the most common types of consumer connections.

    • There are many ways to connect your computer to the internet, the most basic way is using a ISP and modem. more complicated ways are like the Broadband Connection, but you'll still have to use ISP. DSL connections use phone lines, since lines carry digital data at a higher frequency, so they do not tie up the phone line, that is why DSL lines can be "always on."

Lesson 8 Making Presentation

Presentations have many goals:
-Inform
-Educate
-Persuade

Audiences Learn in 3 different ways:
-Seeing
-Hearing
-Doing (or concrete examples)

PowerPoint is a great way to present, it allows you to create a slide show that includes:

-Text
-Photos and Graphics
-Charts and Graphs
-Audio, Video and other sounds

Rules for a good Presentation:
-Keep slides simple and easy to read
-State your Purpose
-Add images that support you points
-Relax and use a friendly speaking style
-Don't just read the slides to your audience

Use the right colors to make slides easy to read:
-use light-colored backgrounds with dark text
-Use dark backgrounds with bright text

Use a Large font size to make slides easy to read:
-Limit the amount of text you have on each slide
-Make text clean and big

Peripherals make using a computer easier:
-Keyboards
-Mice
-Game controller

Organize your Presentation Effectively:
-State your purpose: make it clear what you want people to know
-Present information in multiple ways
-End with a summary

Add Supporting Images:
-Keep people interested
-Reinforce Key messages
-Help visual learners Understand

Avoid cluttering your slides with images:
-Avoid slide Clutter
-Don't use too many colors

Relax and be Friendly:
-Avoid:
-Reading you slides word for word
 -Talking too Fast
-Be sure to:
-Add info & examples in your own words
 -Allow time for note-taking
 -Answer audience questions
 -Practice

The best presentations have:
-Easy-to-read slides that support what is being said
-a clearly stated purpose
-Graphics, photos, and other visual objects used judiciously
-A Speaker who is relaxed and confident

POIT Lesson 6 Peripherals

  • Peripherals are used for computer input and output
    • Ex: Mouse would be input and the Monitor is the output
    • A USB drive is both an input and an output
  • A Keyboard is an input device
  • Most mice use either optical or laser technology
  • monitors are output devices
    • LCD Monitor
    • CRT Monitors
  • Touch screen monitors are both input and output
  • A pixel is the smallest colored dot that can be displayed on a screen
    • More pixels, the more detail
    • standard resolution: 1280x720 pixels
    • High Definition: 1920x1080
  • Printers and scanners add value to systems
    • Multi-function, Both
    •  Scanners, Input
    •  Inkjet Output
  • Internal Drives
    • 3 1/2 in floppy drive
    • CD-ROM Drive
    • DVD drive
    • Blu-Ray
  • External drives\
    • DVD drive with laser light
    • USB drive
    • solid state drive
  • Tower cases have expansion bays
    • Towers usually have at least one bay for an optical drive, such as a DVD or blu-ray drive
  • Your dream computer needs peripherals
    • Keyboard
    • Mouse
    • Monitor
    • Printer
    • Scanner
    • Storage drives
    • Game controllers/Joysticks

ID Face Off

if someone has stolen your identity, and then you notice you're no longer receiving bills from creditors, this is a sign that your identity has been restored - False

The best way to get a free copy of your credit report is to file a freedom of information act request -False

one of the questions talked about how passwords relating to some personal info of yours is bad because any crook can find your info.

another talked about about how you should go to the agency that provided the document if some government type information is stolen

one also said that if you stop receiving bills from the identity thief then it most likely means he is hijacking more of your info and changeling billing addressees, NOT your info has been restored

the last one talked about how it s not safe to wait it out when you realise your identity has been stolen, t is best to act immediately

Trends And Factors

3 Trends you see in Computer Evolution

  1. Computers are constantly tying to get smaller or thinner because they're easy to move or don't take up so much space
  2. Computes are starting to get more portable because they are means they can be used more then a home PC and more user friendly
  3. Computers are starting to be able to Run Faster and smoother so people will want to use them
3 Factors that Drive Computer Innovation
  1. to Find new ways of using Tech that will help any form of life
  2. Easier ways to use a computer so they can sell their tech easier
  3. Make a compute Stronger so it can last longer and satisfy the user
